Mr. Shantanu Mukharji was born in the holy city of Prayag - popularly known as Allahabad on September 23, 1950.
A post graduate in modern Indian history from the university of Allahabad in 1971, Mr Mukharji joined the police services in 1976 and held several key positions in the most populous state of Uttar Pradesh handling complex communal linked law and order and crime related problems specializing in urban policing.
After Indira Gandhi's assassination, he was hand picked for the exclusive and elite Special Protection Group(SPG) for ensuring security of the Prime Ministers of India . After a long stint in this outfit, Mr Mukharji was detailed for several sensitive overseas assignments abroad for addressing paramount national security concerns .
A highly decorated and much acclaimed officer of the Indian Police Service with proven professional abilities, Mr Mukharji is a recipient of Indian Police Medal for meritorious service as well as President's Police Medal for distinguished service in recognition of his contributions to the call of duty.
High noon of Mr Mukharji in his forty years of varied experience and unblemished career came after his retirement from the Government of India when he was specially posted as the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of Mauritius- a coveted post he held with much distinction from 2010 to 2015.
In the aftermath of retirement, Mr Mukharji is completely immersed into prolific writing, both on professional and different topics of contemporary interests. His articles often appear in national dailies. As a security analyst, he participates in security linked programmes on Indian TV channels.
To his credit, he has a couple of books published along with several papers . A widely travelled man, Mr Mukharji vigorously pursues a wide range of cultural and literary activities. He is married and settled in Noida , a satellite town of New New Delhi
